| Tips & Tools: Mobile Phones as Scanning Devices |
| More and more, the rising trend in technology is mobile devices and mobile apps. In the User Application Survey results of the May AdMob mobile metrics report, AdMob reports that iPhone and Android users spend 79-80 minutes per day using apps. As the battle between Apple, Android, Palm and others escalates, so does the advancement of the technology available. Mobile phone cameras are now getting to the quality level that they can be leveraged to turn your phone into a scanner. Most people are used to standard UPC codes. The current standard for phones is the Quick Response (QR) code. The black and white square featured here. QR codes are used because they are more readable by mobile devices like the iPhone. There are other bar code types being used as well. |

|
 |
| QR codes can hold a standard set of information. They’re very easy to make and anyone can create them by finding a free QR code generator on the web. They’re also easy to scan with the standard apps available like NeoReader. The most basic use is to put some information in QR code and put in a place for people to use it. For example, try scanning the QR code pictured here with a standard bar code reading app and it will take you to the Azul Arc website. And so companies are starting to use QR codes as marketing and promotions tools by putting them on business cards, putting coupon code information in them or as a concise way to lead people to greater amounts of information. |
| |
| There can also be more complex, custom examples of QR codes like our mobile app featured in this newsletter for Mannington Commercial. A wide range of possibilities arise when putting standardized information into the barcode, then creating an application that can read and decode that information. |
